Radio Boukman of Cité Soleil
In Cité Soleil, there's a community radio station the envy of broadcasters around the world.Operating on meager resources, it broadcasts 24/7 from its walled station meters from the sea in the very heart of Port au Prince's toughest neighbourhood.
Broadcasting on 95.9 FM for the past three years, Radio Boukman has become a very effective tool in igetting citizens involved in citizens in decision-making in their own community.
This part of the city is notorious for crime and violence and its reputation as a no go area has not been helped by a series confrontations between bandits and police. Things were calming down in the area until the earthquake occured and some 400 hardened criminals escaped, many to Cite Soleil. Clashes have brought much harm to the peaceful population oleading to the marginalization of those stayed in the area.
Boukman has proven itself to be a stable presence working with organisations like IOM and providing the production and broadcasting skills to get quality radio programing on air to national audience.MissionIn this sense it encourages youth to pursue healthy activities, such as music, sport and learning trades.Ensuring the basis of sex education of youth through the broadcasts to end social character to avoid STDs, teenage pregnancy, prostitution and juvenile delinquency.
